The beautiful woodblock prints from 17th and 18th century Japan often contained an element of the mysterious within a formalised structure. A hint of drama of unspoken emotions is revealed by close study of the delicate compositions. This is also true in its way of the younger contemporary printmakers - typically in the etchings of Koura and the mezzotints of Yokoi. A closer look at Koura's "Pier" reveals a scene of dramatic foreboding. The car is abandoned by steps leading down to the water three tiny bullet holes are visible in the windscreen. The motor-cyclists in "Tightrope" are dressed as for battle but where and how is not revealed.
