Born in 1940 in Blackburn Lancashire, Michael Fairclough studied painting at Kingston School of Art from 1957-61. He taught at Belfast College of Art between 1962 and 1964 and then spent two years travelling and studying in Rome after being awarded the Rome Scholarship in 1964. Michael Fairclough later studied at 'Atelier 17' in Paris under S.W. Hayter. He then taught at West Surrey College of Art and Design from 1967-79.
Michael Fairclough has exhibited throughout Europe and UK and in 1983 participated in a two-man show at the Paperworks Gallery in Vancouver and in mixed shows at Wenniger Graphic in Boston and in a three-man show at the Portfolio Gallery in Auckland.
His work is to be found in many private and public collections. Michael Fairclough has also held numerous group and one-man shows including in 1988 a one-man show at the Bohun Gallery Henley on Thames and a two-man show at the New Ashgate Gallery Farnham.
