Mark Braithwaite...Artist
Mark Braithwaite, has an impressive client list. He has twice been Regimental Artist for the British Army; for the Royal Artillery and Signal Regiments. Corporate commissions include paintings for Nestle UK and the GMB Union. A current work in progress is for astrologer Jonathan Cainer.
From Mark Braithwaite's humble beginnings as a penniless pavement artist, Mark's prints and paintings sell worldwide, original paintings fetching four and five figure sums. Mark lives in York with his wife and young son.
A self-taught artist, Mark Braithwaite's natural artistic abilities were fine tuned whilst pavement drawing during holidays from Bradford University, where Mark studied Visual Communications. Whilst painting on the steps of York Minster, Mark Braithwaite realised that he had an almost photographic visual memory, and hence works using little reference material. Captivated by the vibrant colours used by the Impressionists and the refined drawing skills of the Renaissance artists Mark studied their work and techniques; Renoir, Manet, Raphael, Botticelli... .
Mark Braithwaite's work is easily recognisable by its intense colour, subtle alteration of perspective and the intricate attention to detail. Recent work follows a long fascination with the effects of changing weather and light conditions - reflections, shadows and unusual colours.
The preferred medium of Mark's earlier work was acrylic on canvas; ideally suited to his photo-realistic style, the influences of the Impressionist and Renaissance artists are much in evidence. Concealed in each of Mark's landscape pictures is 'Lucy' - his black cat trademark.
More recent landscapes have been painted in watercolour. Mark Braithwaite's "Lost Connection" series of paintings featuring the disappearing red telephone box has received much acclaim.
Mark's figurative work is painted in oil on canvas, using intense light and shadow to create exciting and atmospheric images. Mark has recently rekindled an earlier passion for detailed pencil sketching.
